Support Worker – Cerebral Palsy & Epilepsy – Littleborough, OL15
MAIN SCOPE OF THE JOB:
We are looking for a dedicated support worker with a genuine caring profile and good sense of humour with the ability to learn and implement prescribed therapy to support our young adult client who has cerebral palsy and epilpesy. He lives in his own home and requires 2:1 support with his personal care needs, social integration with his peers, community care and rehabilitation, and participating in tasks of daily living as much as he possibly can.
He is a sociable young man, is non-verbal, with a keen sense of humour, and likes to go out in the community. He is a wheelchair user and has an adapted mobility car – as such driving is essential.
You will work flexibly to support our client in managing aspects of his daily life, both at home and in the community to enhance his quality of life. Working in accordance with his therapists and care support plan, the role is focussed on maximising our client’s independence and wellbeing by meeting his care, support and rehabilitation needs; creating a stimulating environment whilst ensuring his safety and minimising risks; providing companionship and encouragement to help him achieve his goals.
HOURS:
Working days: Monday to Sunday – 7am to 7pm (option for split shifts is negotiable).
Working hours: combination of day shifts and sleep in shifts
PAY:
£11.58 per hour Monday to Friday day shifts
£13.32 per hour Saturday and Sunday day shifts
£23.18 per hour Bank Holiday day shifts
Sleep in shift calculated as £56.56 plus 5 hours at the day rate (weekday/weekend)
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Experience of working with people with a brain injury
- Experience in carrying out occupational therapy/physiotherapy programmes
- Excellent communication skills and the ability read non-verbal cues; great sense of humour
- Experience of administering medication (training provided if necessary)
- To use specialist equipment, including wheelchairs, hoists and mobility equipment
- To have knowledge and an understanding of peg-feeding equipment.Full training will be provided where necessary for the right person
- Team player with flexibility in approach to care
- Hold a full, clean driver’s licence
GENERAL:
- To work with our client in his own home and in the community
- To assist in all aspects of personal care
- To provide support within the guidelines of his OT/PT and care support plan
- To provide assistance, motivation, support and encouragement to aim towards a more independent lifestyle
- To motivate and encourage participation in a variety of domestic, leisure, education and work pursuits
- To travel with and act as a driver for our client, accompanying him on community activities
- To monitor and support agreed rehabilitation techniques and strategies
- To motivate and encourage us to complete domestic activities to a standard acceptable to our client
- To help meet our client’s emotional needs
- To undertake training and supervision as arranged by the Employer
- To liaise closely with other professionals/therapists as directed by the Employer
- To participate in regular reviews as directed by the Employer
- To ensure and maintain client confidentiality and diplomacy in record-keeping and discussions concerning our client
- In an emergency, stand in for other members of staff if the client would otherwise be at risk or suffer harm
- To ensure the client’s living area, personal possessions and kept clean, neat and tidy
- Any other appropriate and reasonable task in relation to the employment which the Employer may require from time to time
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
Essential Requirements:
- Enhanced DBS Certificate – adult workforce (applied for by employer if required)
- 3 years’ driving experience and must be 26 years of age or above for car insurance purposes
- Able to drive automatic vehicle although training will be provided to the right applicant
- Full clean UK drivers’ licence
- The driver’s license must not have drink/driving endorsements
- Good level of spoken English
- Punctual, committed and dependable
- A calm temperament, trustworthy, reliable with a good sense of humour
- Ability to apply common sense
- A strong personality to compliment the client’s needs
- Satisfactory references
- Right to work in the UK
Desirable:
- Health and Social Care First Aid Certificate
- Flexibility to work occasional additional hours
